About Us

sheet winch servicing

Rope & Splice Services recommend winch servicing is done on all boats and should done at least once or  twice a year, depending on the use.

Most winch servicing doesn't take doesn’t take a lot of time if your winches are serviced at regular intervals. The consequences not  to doing any servicing, can be quite deadly and without warning .

Winches are full of moving parts under extremely high load, imagine the load on the internals when sailing in 20 - 25 knots of wind add in the surging of a Genoa sheet as the boat pushes through waves, and catamarans are twice the loading of a similar sized monohull.

If  your winches aren’t making the clicking sound, or seem to have no noise at all, (due to using to much grease) or play in the drum (drum wobbly and/or moving up-down or leaning over under no load) or worse still are stiff to turn by hand or don’t go round  at all, then you have a problem and if not serviced you could be up a new winch before long, which can be expensive.

Some winch servicing we have come across in the past has been simply slap some winch grease on the bearing and some oil on the small but very important springs and pawls, and it's serviced!

SERVICING OF WINCHES

Winch servicing is more than smattering some grease on bearing and oil the pawls, there's the build up of grime and muck add in salt, shaving of metal are added to the mix all need to be cleaned off before checking parts re-greasing.

We have super wash basin that is engineering grade to remove all traces of muck and shaving's before reassembling.

WHAT WE DO

We come to your boat and check condition/parts are functioning.

First by stripping the winch down to the shaft .

(In some cases removing the base to better service particularly Lewmar Brand)

We gather each individual winches parts and head to our industrial wash basin and give all parts a super clean, before returning to your boat and greasing  winches with manufacturers recommended grease/oil.

reassembling the winches.
All winches get new pawls and springs.

You can save yourself many dollars from simply having your winches serviced professionally,  we do winch  servicing  from just $35 per winch.

We provide mobile service for all yacht and catamaran owners at marinas or private berths.
